I’m going to share with you my life story and the sort of person I am because I think it’s important for you to have an understanding of who I am.
I was born, Christopher Stephen Tuck (still am, that part hasn’t changed) on 8th September, 1978 in Woden Valley hospital in Canberra. I spent the first 6 months there and then moved to stunning Sydney. We lived in Crows Nest early on but my first memories were of a ground floor flat in Kirribilli, on the water opposite the Opera House. My first baby sitter was the girlfriend of the Cold Chisel drummer, Steve Prestwich, and he would let me play on his drum set so I maintain I helped in write their classic song “Flame trees” to which he is accredited.
Around the age of 4 my first brother James was born and we moved to Mosman. I have fond memories of these years. He was 6 weeks premature but despite his early years being a struggle today he has grown to be a fantastic surfer and board maker, and a Kurt Cobain lookalike, perhaps a bit better looking though.
At this stage of my life, every day seemed like an adventure, riding our bikes with the local kids in the neighbourhood, spending days at Balmoral beach, exploring the rock pools at Collaroy, supporting Manly in the Rugby League at Brookvale Oval and the Swans in the AFL playing at the SCG, playing soccer on the Northern Beaches, visiting Tooronga Zoo and taking day trips to Pittwater. Life was a dream! And we had a new edition, my second brother Nick. He has since grown into a strong landscaper and music nut!
At age 10, everything changed. My parents, Angela and Stephen, who I love very much, decided to move to Melbourne. The first year was fun. I enjoyed making new friends and watching the AFL. I had to adopt a new team which happened to be Carlton because they had won the premiership a couple of years before. After year one, I became home sick and would enter a state of depression for the next 5 years.
I was a shy kid who lacked self confidence and as a result, teenage kids being what they are, was bullied and felt like an outcast a lot of the time. My family didn’t have much money so the only thing that would bring me joy was watching my beloved Carlton Blues on the weekend. Watching them win the 1995 Grand Final at the MCG being the highlight. During this time my third brother Andrew was born. Don’t worry, there are still plenty more to come.
One experience I did enjoy was being a Ball boy at the Australian Open. I was lucky enough to look after such players as Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Goran Ivanisevic and our Pat Rafter. And I was on Centre Court one night and Pat was playing this no name French guy. He was getting thrashed.
As tennis players never do, he got a little frustrated and hit the ball as high as the roof. Of course it was on my side so I toddled out and looked up into the night sky. All I could see was pitch black. And then, all of a sudden a little dot appeared, and it got larger, and larger and I bent down, took the catch and it was the biggest roar all night because Pat Rafter lost in straight sets.
My mum was watching it, lying in bed after having my forth brother William, surprise surprise, and said told me later she heard Bruce McAvaney say it was “The best cricket catch he’d ever seen!” That is my only claim to fame!
I began my first job at McDonalds which was very hard work. My pay rate was a measly $4.10 p/h but I bought a cycle computer with my first pay of $45.
When I was 16, I moved to Canberra to live with my grandmother and Aunt Shell. At the same time my family moved to the small Victorian seaside town of Flinders and my first sister Sarah was born.
I really needed a change and had always wanted to live there as we been for many fun family holidays since I was young. I attended Daramalan College, a catholic school for the next two years. I really enjoyed those years, meeting lots of fun new friends and being very active, continuing to work at McDonalds and constantly playing golf, table tennis, AFL and basketball with my cousins and at school.
I completed my year 12 and then it was time to head back home to Flinders. For the first 12 months I became home sick again, struggling to make friends and find work. Finally I became fed up with this and took any work that came along. I began working as a furniture restorer, landscaper and waiter all at the same time.
I made the decision that I was going to move back to Canberra as I didn’t see a future in a small country town. So I saved harder than I have ever done in my life and left in November 1998. Thinking back now, November has always been a big month for me. I’ve made a lot of significant changes and met many of my girlfriends then.
My plan was to study a Tafe course on Mapping and Surveying because I’d always had an interest in Geography. I moved into my Aunt and Uncles townhouse by myself and created my very own pad. I loved that place, we had many legendary house parties there, filled with all night drinking, bon fires, beautiful girls and fireworks.
I learnt then that it’s very important to study something you’re passionate about. After 2 years of trying to complete the course I gave it away and focused on working at McDonalds and Subway because I enjoyed this more.
These were very full on years for me. I was running on caffeine and anything else that wasn’t bolted down, working and studying 80 hours a week whilst trying to maintain a relationship.
I also took up AFL umpiring on weekends which sent my fitness through the roof. But with the massive workload, working day and night on 2, 3 or 4 hours sleep eventually took their toll. I was in constant back pain and leg pain. I became very stressed, tired and angry and my relationships suffered. Another thing that contributed to the problems was the strong medication I was on for acne. It dried out my skin and sent me a little crazy. At the end of a 6 month period I became very sick, sicker than I’ve ever been in my life. Something had to change. My 2nd little sister Emily was born this year too.
I backed things off a little after this time to around 60 hours per week. The following year was one of my happiest. I started to find more of a life balance. My AFL umpiring was going on in leaps and bounds, being lucky enough to do games on the SCG, AFL Under 16 Championships at Football Park in Adelaide and first grade in Canberra. I quit McDonalds and just worked full time at Subway.
I met a lovely young girl and we had the best summer ever, full of day trips to the beach and Sydney, camping, bushwalking and big nights drinking. It finished with my first road trip to the New South Wales mid north coast and finally Queensland. I was in love with her and this magical new place but there was one problem. She lived in Brisbane and I was in Canberra. I made the decision to move up by the end of the year.
In November 2003, I made the big move to Brisbane. The first few months were hard. Once again I got homesick and took whatever work I could to get by. After 9 months I decided to stick to what I knew, Subway. Very soon I received my first ever promotion to assistant manager. Then not long after, manager. A year later I was Area Manager looking after 3 stores.
However, the stress of the job became too much and I spiralled into a maze of negativity. I hated my job, my staff, my boss, my girlfriend and the customers. I just hated life! I would make daily trips to the bakery, juice bar, raid the lolly jar more than anyone and became addicted to energy drinks. I was exercising once a week but not making it a priority. All this lead to a weight gain of 12 kgs. For the first time in my life I had a weight problem.
Sometimes it’s a good thing to experience strong negative emotions because they can spur you into action. One day, I woke up and decided that this wasn’t who I was. So I left my job and began my Personal Training course. The next 12 weeks were truly life changing. I learnt all about effective exercise and nutrition and lost the 12 kgs. Being immersed daily in health and fitness I became obsessed. I began exercising 1-2 hours per day and I cannot remember eating one thing unhealthy in that whole time. I started reading mindset books then bacame insanely positive and felt a million dollars every day.
After finishing my course I scored my dream job at Goodlife Health Club, Fortitude Valley. I based myself there for 3 years and meet many wonderful people. My girlfriend also did her PT course and started working there. However, soon after we decided to split after 6 years.
Today, my office consists of New Farm Park by the river and coffee shops for consulting clients which I love. I live with my funny flatmate Jeremy and my two “Star Wars cats”, Obi and Yoda whom I share with the ex-girlfriend, funny hey! This year has been my best ever! Some of the highlights being completing my 2nd Gold Coast Marathon, the City to Surf in Sydney, presenting to hundreds of people and Pushups for Charity.
Despite my 20s being a little rocky I know I have made many leaps in personal growth recently. I know I have the ability to help others improve their quality of life and create the body they want.
Today, I believe I’m the sort of person who…..
